Unusual Bird Flu Virus Kills Two Men In China


There is recent news on the death of  two Chinese men in Shanghi with the H7N9 bird flu virus strain.  The oldest of the two men that died was 87 years old and the youngest was 27 years old.  The older man became sick on February 27, 2013 and passed away March 10, 2013.  The younger man became ill on February 19, 2013 and passed away over three weeks later on March 4, 2013.  

Can this virus spread?

Health experts in China state that they do not know how the virus strain has spread.  This virus strain has never affected a human before, Chinese health authorities reported.  However, they can assure these three people did not transmit the virus to each other.

A third person a woman in a nearby Province of Anhui also contracted the H7N9 strain and is in critical condition.  Test were done on 88 people who had close contact to the three infected patients and the test did not show abnormalities.

The World Health Organization says there is no vaccine to protect humans from the H7N9 infection. 

How could a virus known to affect birds now affect humans?
