#LATISM14 #ELHackathon: Who has questions about a Hackathon?

Our annual conference would not be complete without El Hackathon!  Which is going on during the three whole days of the #LATISM14.

El Hackaton LATISM 14Want to know more about #ELHackathon?

#ELHackathon at the #LATISM14 conference shows a shift in the Latino hacker community. This is the first #LATISM hackathon where we saw two exciting things happen that normally don’t happen at these events. One, the majority of the hackers were women. This is important because women account for 20% of the tech work force and only around 15% of hackathon participants in the US. LATISM’s female hackers make up 75% of all participants this year. The second part is that we had our first set of Latina hardware hackers!

Hardware is not a common medium to utilize in hackathons because it requires knowledge of electronics along with computer programming. The hardware team is composed of twin sisters, America and Penelope Lopez (@misoclever22  and @dtlabikers) who are looking to setup a place in the internet with video tutorials and D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) instructional content for hardware hacks.  The bonus is that the tutorials will be in Spanish and English! Entonces pongan atención. Another Latina to watch is Marilu aka @STEMLatina who is hacking some mobile products just for the sheer love of coding. Marilu is still in High School and looking to attend one of the best engineering schools in the USA.

#ElHackathon answers a few questions about our community’s involvement in tech innovation. This is the place to raise awareness about Latino innovation and get involved in the creative process of tech. It’s an event that gives Latinos a glimpse of the process used when creating cutting edge products and we hope it shows Latino parents what the new in-demand professions are like.  And most important, it’s the event that support the next generation of Latinos in their quest to make the technology we will consume in the future.
