LATISM project in Montecristi

We came here to serve, but ended up receiving way more than we could have ever imagined.  Montecristi is a small city in the border of Haiti on the Dominican Republic island.  The community is so vibrant and eager to learn about social media and the many ways they can use it as a tool for sustainable development.

Our best approach was to start with a training of trainers.  We have invited a group of young community leaders who were already active on Facebook (some even on Twitter).

Lideres creando

We’re sharing all the secrets and tips about using social media for tourism, economic empowerment and e-commerce.  Their commitment will be to keep sharing the knowledge.

Local Leaders having some Twitter Fun

These young leaders will be in charge of the cyber room, the connections, the community building and the logistics of the e-commerce for the artisans.  They will also help the local business community put Montecristi on the map.  Currently it’s impossible to find all the services, hotels, restaurants and activities that the village has to offer.  This will no longer be the case thanks to our local leaders.

Local leaders opening their first blog

We have divided the cyber – sustainable development project into three areas: Artisans, Hospitality and Local Businesses.  Each leader has been assigned to one of these areas.  They will not only train their target group, but they will also blog, vlog, tweet and enchant the audience about their products and services.

The Summer Camp has been a total success.  We have a group of kids learning English as a second language, arts and sports.

It’s been great to see our own kids take full ownership of the project and serve as assistant teachers!

I’m just impressed at how fast they learn.  You should hear them speaking English just after two weeks of lessons.

Local camper just learned so quickly!

Part of the camp includes fun competitions and typical games.  We’ve learned tons but we’ve also had so much fun!

girls vs. boys - guess who won?

During our last week we will launch all the pages, blogs, tweets, fan pages and much more.  Stay tuned to show your love and support to nuestra LATISM familia on this side of the world.  They already know many of you.  They felt admiration and pride last Thursday as they quietly observed the LATISM party.  Next Thursday, they will officially join our familia.  I can’t wait!
