8/23 #LATISM Twitter Party: Connecting Latinos to Healthcare through Technology

La salud es lo primero” [Health is first and foremost], is one of those timeless phrases our abuelitas used to say, and as we all have grown to learn, abuelita is NEVER wrong. It’s pretty safe to agree on the importance health has in one’s life.  Being healthy is a natural, personal, social and global concern and for Latinos in the US, it ranks high on the priority list of things that need national attention, pronto!

Our community is still dealing with a host of challenging issues when it comes to taking care of their own salud. According to a recent Pew Hispanic Center (PHC) survey of Latino adults, conducted in conjunction with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), more than one-fourth of Latino adults in the US still lacks a usual healthcare provider, and a similar proportion report obtaining no health care information from medical personnel in the past year. The study also found that more than eight in ten Latinos report receiving health information from alternative sources, such as television and radio.

And these problems may start from infancy. According to a report released today on the New England Journal of Medicine, large health disparities were found among black, Latino, and white fifth-graders: Black and Latino children were much more likely to report worse overall state of health.

Tonight on LATISM, we’ll discuss what is causing these disparities, what can be done to improve the overall health of our community, and what possibilities technology may offer in terms of both building awareness and improving access to health for Latinos.

Connecting Latinos to Healthcare through Technology and Innovation is one of the topics to be examined during our upcoming LATISM 12 conference. We invite you to join us tonight, and then in October at the conference. Your insights are essential in finding solutions to help our community!
