If you don’t already own a tablet computer, chances are likely you will soon. Shipments are up 60% in the second quarter of 2013 over 2012 and, ironically, at a time when no shiny new models have been released by the major players. Sales figures show a drop from the first quarter fo the year, but analysts think a third quarter rebound is highly likely in that Apple is planning on releasing new iPad models during the second half of 2013.
In addition, makers of Android tablets like ASUS, Samsung and Amazon are seeing very strong numbers and will likely have new models forthcoming. As an example, Samsung shipped 8.1 million new tablets versus 2.1 million at this time last year. Notably slower in terms of sales are the Windows-based tablets but even there, some progress and growth are being seen. The holiday season, especially in western nations, could produce a huge boost in tablet sales and with a wider variety and more reasonable pricing, tablets could become a more commodity type high-tech purchase as opposed to a luxury item.
