What if students learn faster without teachers?

In colleges students are often responsible for teaching themselves using textbooks and a syllabus given by a professor.  What if this concept was applicable to younger students?

Sugata Mitra, is a professor of educational technology and has introduced the method of learning “self organized learning environments.”  This method of education allows students to work together on computers with broadband access and gives them the chance to find their own solutions.  Students still have adults available if they need guidance, however they are not the ones teaching the students.

Mitra’s experiments have proven to be effective with kids in India.  Where he set up  a “hole in the wall” experiment.  Mitra allowed students to freely surf the net in India and he found self-organized learning worked to improve English-language pronunciation, reading comprehension and even the basics of DNA replication.

Self organized learning has  a lot of benefits because children get to explore the world through their eyes.  Adults are needed to encourage them, but it is great when the students are excited about learning and their own discoveries.
