hispanic graIn past years the High School drop out rates have been significantly high among the Hispanic and African American student population.  According to newly released data from the Census Bureau the national dropout rate reached a record low last year.  Hopefully this is an indicator of closing the achievement gap with Hispanic and African American students.   The research indicates a  decrease in the drop out rates that went from 12% in 2010 to 7% of the nation’s 18-to-24 year olds that had dropped out of high school.

The findings indicate that there is a decrease in drop out rates and more Hispanic students are completing high school and enrolling in colleges.  According to recent findings by the Pew Research Center, ” The decline in the size of the Hispanic dropout population has been particularly noteworthy because it’s happened at the same time that the Hispanic youth population is growing. ”  There is major growth in education with the Hispanic community.  Closing the achievement gap with Hispanic students shows growth and it should remain a topic of importance.
