Yesterday, LATISM was honored to be invited to help organize a Twitter chat with the Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and the Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, Juan Sepulveda. The chat was offered to kick off the Administration’s focus on Hispanic education as a part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Duncan and Sepúlveda responded to questions sent in via Twitter hashtags #HispanicEd and #LATISM. The one-hour Twitter conversation discussed how important Hispanic success in education is to America’s economy. Questions covered the whole spectrum of education as it pertains to Latino students: from those concerning ELL and Early Childhood education to others regarding the No Child Left Behind, the Drop-Out Rate and what the current administration is doing to solve it, to of course, the Dream Act and the current situation with Alabama’s HB 56 Law.

Participants were asked to submit their questions in advance and -as a true sign of the importance of this topic to Latinos – we got too many for the time allotted. Secretary Arne Duncan, Juan Sepulveda and the team from the Department of Education will answer the remaining ones on a separate blog post.

For now, you can view the video of the chat as live-streamed via the Department of Education’s U-Stream channel.

Below is the recording from the session, and you may recognize some familiar Twitter handles from the questions that were picked to be answered. Thanks so much for the great questions and participation, LATISM!
