Re-examining mental health after Robin Williams’ death

mental health

mental healthIt is difficult to realize that there was a huge problem with mental health after they committed suicide.  Although, some people show signs of depression here and there, but no one wants to imagine the worst.  On August 11, 2014 America lost a great person before mentioning his great career as an actor and entertainer I want to acknowledge the fact that he was a human being first.

Robin Williams sought help for his depression in 2006 and wasn’t diagnosed with clinical depression and it remains unknown whether that ever changed or whether he sought or received treatment for mental health issues.  In the industry of comedy it has been said That depression, or at least sadness, often dogs funny people is a show business given.  Perhaps, the death of Williams can open society’s eyes about the dangers of depression when left untreated.

According the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), in 2012, “an estimated 16 million adults aged 18 or older in the U.S. had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.” That statistic represents nearly 7 percent of all adults in the U.S.  An estimated 30,000 people commit suicide each year in the United States, according to NIMH. And over 90 percent of people who have committed suicide have been diagnosed with mental illness, according to NAMI.

The statistics are alarming but mental health doesn’t seem like a priority for government officials, what else with it take for people to realize that depression is a serious disorder.
