In the myst of everything that is going on…from #BlackLivesMatter to #BlueLivesMatter to #Trump vs #Hillary it is astounding to me that the biggest news of the week, in every television set and every conversation within an ear-shot, is PokemonGo.
Mi gente, que pasa?
Have we lost sight of the fact that this country is going thru one of the most intense and dangerous struggles since the 1960’s? Are we so scared to talk about what’s important that we’d much rather drown our attention in some mindless game? Just how popular is it, you may ask. Well….let’s explore that shall we?
According to the Huffington Post the popular “Pokemon Go” app climbed to the top of the charts on the iOS App Store and Google Play after its release last Thursday. Now a week in, new data show that people are spending considerably more time on the game than on social networks like Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram.
Now granted I don’t actually have a problem with this game taking over social media…but then I saw this stat: Best guess as of today’s date is that approximately 9.5 million daily active users are playing Pokemon Go within the first week of release (that’s $7 billion dollars in Nintendo’s pocket by the way). Come on now! IN ONE WEEK? That’s ridiculous! We can’t even get people to vote in the primaries but we got almost 10million people to play a game? We can’t end hunger in America but Nintendo just scored $7billion dollars without breaking a sweat. What is wrong with this picture mi America linda?
I’m not saying we don’t have the right to have fun, I am only suggesting that perhaps we have placed too much importance on a game when our current political and civil climate truly needs our attention. Take a moment and really think about this: we are investing our money and attention on something that is not just distracting us from very important issues right now but it’s actually costing us more than a couple cents, it’s actually costing us our lives!
Ah yes, it has come to this. “Lamar Hickson who is a 26 year old man is the prime accused when he caused one of the worst highway accidents in history. Any guesses what he did?? Well, he just stopped in the middle of the highway and what he wanted to do was catch a Pikachu.”– More info: http://bit.ly/29EHEn9
Oh, and don’t forget this one: Armed Robbers Target Pokemon Go Players in Missouri, Maryland & Other States
Or this one which many people are debating if it’s real or not:
Or this one, when your kid finds a dead body– no big deal:
And sadly this one too: Pokemon Go Leads People to Home With More than Forty Sex Offenders
Ya ven cual es mi problema? Let’s stop the madness people.
Let’s refocus, regroup and teach our kids (and some adults too) that there are more serious and life-altering things going on right now. That crime rates and death rates are at an all time high. That our attention to what matters in this political climate is more important than ever and we are WASTING IT on an app that is neither making us smarter nor making us richer (well, except if you’re Nintendo!).
Looking to entertain your kids or yourself? Get involved in a sport, encourage yourself and your loved ones to learn about the many social movements that are impacting our nation, get involved in the current election process and call people out on their obsession to something that is causing more harm than good in my opinion. Encourage engagement in real civic and social issues that can cause real and very much needed positive change in this country instead of adding to an already huge list of problems. RISE ABOVE IT MI GENTE – porfavor!
