In an effort to promote civic participation, educate communities about the benefits of becoming a U.S. citizen, and mobilize them to action, LATISM joined forces with Univision Contigo, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), and trailblazing Latina journalist Maria Elena Salinas to support the Citizenship Campaign.
We have approximately 8.7 million who qualify for citizenship, yet only a small percentage complete the process each year. It is of paramount importance for everyone to have an opportunity to participate in the democracy our great nation, the United States of America, has to offer.
The #HazteCiudadano Twitter Chat ignited a dialogue with the community about the abundant benefits, responsibilities, and opportunities for individuals and their families when they become citizens of the United States. Some members of the community following the conversation on twitter shared their personal stories and identified some of the barriers that have made it difficult to initiate the citizenship process.
We applaud Univision Contigo and NALEO for advancing the mission of this much needed initiative.
We urge our communities to learn about existing resources that can help them navigate through the process and get on the path to citizenship. For more information, please visit UnivisionContigo.com.
