The immigration reform is perceived to bring more prosperity for illegal immigrants in this country, but are we looking at the costs for this new reform?
The revamp of border control and visa policies is estimated to cost tax payers $7 billion. Alan Kruger chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers said immigrants must be allowed into the mainstream economy because the US population is rapidly aging.
People are living longer and longer these days “nearly all of the growth of the nation’s working age population in coming decades will be accounted for by immigrants and their children ”. Immigrants are an asset to our economy addressed Alan Kruger, Fully 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children.
The argument of higher tax costs comes from the notion that when the illegal population receives green cards they will be eligible for a variety of programs. The programs include food stamps, Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and Medicaid. Three Republicans sent a letter to the “Gang of 8” members “By their very nature, these programs necessarily represent a net fiscal cost to taxpayers. The long-term costs, and the strain on resources for low-income Americans, could be enormous.”
