“If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.” Those words that epitomize New York City also express how we feel about LATISM’13 National Conference taking place in the Big Apple this September.
Organizations across a number of industries have teamed up with LATISM in anticipation of connecting with the most influential and passionate Latino(a)s active in the new multicultural web to bring offline and online community leaders together through Education, Technology, Business and Health centered panels, events, and workshops.
“We take pride in engaging our local, regional and national communities during our National conference,” said Sal Mendoz, Director at LATISM New York. “Some attendees arrive without a Twitter account and leave the event empowered with the knowledge of social media and even pick up new technical skills. That education is a huge part of our Mission,” he added.

To address the disparity of representation of Latinas in leadership positions, NHLI, a national 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington, D.C., was created in 1987 in response to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Glass Ceiling Initiative. This seminal study found that while minorities and women were making substantial gains in entering the workforce, they were not equally represented at the mid- and senior-levels of management in government or corporate sectors. The report found that Latinas were also significantly underrepresented on corporate boards and in the nonprofit and political arenas.
The NHLI is the only national leadership development program in the United States focused on future Latina leaders. The Institute’s goals include:
- Ensuring that Hispanic women are in leadership positions and have the access and power to influence public policy and shape an equitable and humane society.
- Enhancing and developing leadership abilities among Hispanic women whose commitment, contribution and dedication will help ensure a vibrant and sustainable future for the United States.
- Providing visible role models and mentors for Hispanic women leaders.
- Improving services provided to the Hispanic community by local, state and national organizations.

What started as a college assignment (to develop a brand awareness campaign for a hypothetical company) quickly morphed into a passion, then an obsession, then a livelihood. Not content to simply create the campaign on paper and pixels, Alcides Aguasvivas and Jose Martinez made their plan a reality and launched a full-service graphics and printing house—Pix-L Graphx.
Aided by a handful of talented design school recruits, and their indispensable head of security, Mason, Pix-L Graphx quickly made a name for itself with fresh, hip graphic design and affordable full-color printing to entertainment companies, restaurants, health and fitness firms, and other established and startup ventures. Early payments included a lifetime gym membership and a few spectacular meals.
Pix-L Graphx soon outgrew its Hudson County design studio and established a full-service graphics and print shop in Rutherford, New Jersey. There they tailor cutting edge creative and printing solutions for companies of all sizes, from Fortune to midsize to sole proprietors.
