LATISM NY Recap! Social Media for Social Good

This past Thursday, New York City became the center of the Universe to Latinos hailing from neighboring states of New Jersey, Connecticut and as far as Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The reason? Latinos in Social Media (LATISM) was in town, that’s what! And boy, did we light it up – almost one hundred attendees strong!

The LATISM NY Tweetup, an informal gathering of folks in the NY area who are interested in the intersection of our Latinidad and the internet, was hosted by Johnson & Johnson at the swanky Penthouse at the Edelman PR offices in Tribeca, NY.

The theme for the night: “Social Media for Social Good”: using Social Media to go beyond simply talking to inspiring and exerting tangible, concrete change that benefits our community via initiatives like the Por Tu Familia/NYC initiative for the American Diabetes Association, the text4baby initiative by Johnson & Johnson, The “Es el momento” campaign for Education by Univision, and LATISM’s own sustainable development project in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

An expert panel, which included Susan Can, Director of Corporate Equity at Johnson & Johnson,  Mónica Talán, VP Corporate Communications at Univision, George Torres of Sofrito Media Group, Dr. J. Emilio Carrillo, VP and Medical Director of Community Health at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and Elianne Ramos, CEO of Speak Hispanic Communications and Vice-Chair of Communications and PR for LATISM, walked the crowd through details and strategies for past and future social media initiatives at their respective organizations.

We can go on and on about the sheer thrill of getting a real-life hug from some of our favorite Big Apple LATISM, but pictures – like actions – speak louder than words.

Also, don’t miss the LATISM Tweetup write-up on the Johnson & Johnson blog: and well as Fox News Latino’s take on how LATISM is “ushering in a new ‘Community’ through social good in social media”.

LATISM would like to thank:
