Last night, in light of the unveiling of the Senate proposal for Immigration Reform which promises to modernize the U.S. immigration system by creating a path to legal status for millions of undocumented immigrants and others, we decided to once again join forces with our friends from the March for Innovation (iMarch), as well as with our longstanding Latino advocacy partners NALEO to discuss the bill.
We were honored to count with the participation of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as well as “Gang of 8” Senators Richard Durbin, D-Ill., Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and of course, the greater LATISM community. It is very gratifying to see the commitment of this group of elected officials to engage with the community and answer the myriad of questions the bill has sparked. On behalf of our community, we say, “Thank you, Mr. Mayor and Senators, our community appreciates the work you are doing for Immigration Reform!
Though the bill is out, does not mean it is perfect. Our job to ensure it ends up as a humane piece of legislation is nowhere near done. That is why today, as millions of people, organizations and schools around the country participate in the Immigration Reform Day of Action, a virtual march on Washington, D.C., we’d like to urge our community to join LATISM and iMarch as we continue to raise our voices to push for smart, comprehensive immigration reform!
Sign up for the virtual iMarch for Innovation taking place TODAY, April 19, 2013! www.marchforinnovation.com.
You’ll learn all the ways you can make your voice be heard — including through your blogs and social media. In the meantime, here’s the transcript of last night’s chat below. Golden nuggets of immigration information, everyone – enjoy!
