Justice For All? Teaching About Crime and Punishment in America

The US sadly holds a larger population in prison than any other nation in the world.

Teachers are trying to ask students whether they think the nation’s system is effective in combating crime.

Incarceration rates have tripled over the last 30 years.  Nonviolent offenders make 60% of the 2.3 million prisoners, with nonviolent offenders accounting for one quarter of that populations.

How is this affecting people in prison?

Prisoners affect the state budgets for example, in California the supreme court announced that overcrowding in California amounted to “cruel and unusual punishment”.
