Internet outraged by Facebook’s ‘creepy’ mood experiment

fb studyHave you ever wondered how often companies manipulate content online to spark consumer responses?

Facebook conducted a study in 2012 it changed the content mix in the News Feeds of almost 690,000 users.  Do you think that this is a fair way for users to unknowingly participate in this kind of research?  Do people know that in the terms of agreement Facebook states they can take user information for research? 

The results of this study published in the prestigious academic journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

The study found that users that were shown more negative content were slightly more likely to produce negative posts. Users in the positive group responded with more upbeat posts.  This experiment gave Facebook absolute control over the emotional state of its users.  This can be an ethical issue but Facebook does include this in their terms of agreement.  

The Facebook spokesman said the company frequently does research to “improve our services and to make the content people see on Facebook as relevant and engaging as possible.”   However, some people believe Facebook should of never executed the study.
