Heads Up: This Week on LATISM, It’s All About Back To School!

Back to School

With schools around the country reopening their doors this and next week, we want to make sure we equip Latino parents in our sphere with the best information and resources that can help our kids achieve great things – this academic year and beyond!

So get out your notebooks and sharpen your pencils, we have  TWO Twitter chats this week discussing all about Latino EDUCATION.

We’ll be posting more details about this as the week progresses… but for now, MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!

First off, on Wednesday August 15: It’s Back To School Time!

National statistics continuously point that Latino parents are less likely than white parents to attend PTA meetings, school events, or take part in school committees or activities. For this reason, there is a belief among school administrators and teachers that Latino parents are not involved in their children’s academic activities and do not care about their children’s academic success. But could it be, perhaps, that Latino parents support their kids’ education in non-traditional ways?

We have partnered with MetroPCS, the nation’s most affordable 4GLTE service, to gather around Latino parents to discuss Latino parent involvement, plans for the school year, and to share back-to-school resources. Join us and you may even win a cool prize 😉

Then on Thursday, August 16, we’re back on the Education track to discuss: The Evolution of Education: New Channels, Opportunities and Challenges with Technology in the Classroom. This will be one of the featured topics on our upcoming LATISM ’12 Conference, so let’s get the conversation started!

The convergence of technology and education seems promising for a community that is supposedly leading tech and mobile adoption. According to some experts, the so-called “digital divide” has gone beyond just being an access issue to a digital literacy one, and many still fear that poor Latino and minority children may still be left behind when the education and technology convergence becomes the new academic norm.

At this chat, we’ll be joined by the folks at the National Center for Family Literacy, a non-profit organization devoted to advocating for education through their family literacy programs. They will be answering your questions and sharing resources as we discuss the role of technology in education and how parents can maximize its impact to help their children succeed.
