Florida Governor Rick Scott.
Florida’s Republican Governor Rick Scott’s recent veto of a bill that would have allowed many young, undocumented aliens to apply for temporary drivers licenses is a sad example of an embattled politician trying to curry favor with a conservative voting block. In doing so, he simply does more harm to an already contentious debate. The irony is that Florida’s Republican-controlled legislature overwhelmingly supported this law.
The President and many members of Congress are fighting to come up with intelligent immigration reform policies that would be fair to all and people like Arpaio and Scott are fighting equally hard to keep discriminatory practices in place. It would behoove all of us to support those who are working for reform. Scott faces a very tough election and with the right candidate opposing him, perhaps his days in office can end and reform can move forward, That is something to work for.
