As part of our LATISM16 Latinos as Change Agents annual conference in October we are getting ready to have our annual S.T.E.A.M Youth Fair on Thursday, October 20th, 2016 from 1pm to 4pm. The Fair highlights the importance of our youth’s involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math disciplines in our workforce and throughout our community.
The U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee estimates that between 2010 and 2020 the overall employment of of STEAM careers will increase by 17 percent. The 2000 ACM SIGCSE Bulletin-Women and Computing published works underlining the importance of increasing minorities and under-representative groups in computer science. Their research found that increasing the participation of these groups is vital to the growth and sustainability of the field.
This week’s Twitter party is created to hear from our parents, educators, our STEAM professionals and our youth on what their experience and exposure to STEAM has been, the impact it has had on their everyday lives, and the challenges that our community faces in entering STEAM careers. We will open a dialogue on how we can help each other spread information and resources about the impact of STEAM in every day life.
But wait– there’s more! We will also be sharing details on how to nominate a student or champion educator in your local community to be selected as one of the final 50 exhibitors in this year’s LATISM16 Student STEAM Fair!
