A program in new London, CT has taken a novel, but ingenious approach to helping people get trained, get educated, and get jobs. While not successful 100% of the time for every student, the program has made some very good strides. One of the main points is to not only help people get specific job-related training, but to also get their GED at the same time, if necessary.
The program is called I-BEST or Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training. In the last 18 months, the program has served 100 women and 44 men with a 94 percent completion rate. Of those who needed it, about 74 percent successfully completed their GED. The program has been funded thus far by internal money and a state education grant. Programs like this are crucial in helping people break the cycle of poverty and better themselves. As always, education is the first step.
