According to a new study, researchers are very encouraged by early results from testing a vaccine meant to help cure Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is caused when a person’s immune system destroys the cells that make insulin, the hormone needed to control blood sugar levels. The new vaccine targets the specific white blood cells that do the damage and pretty much shuts them down. So far, it appears that the vaccine does not damage any other part of the immune system.
The scientists involved say it’s early in the process, but they want to start testing on a wider basis. Eventually, they think if the vaccine works, it may be able to cure Type 1 Diabetes.
