Border Security Debate Getting Out of Hand

Two stories caught my eye today. In one, U.S. Senators are looking to introduce additions to the hotly debated immigration reform bill that would double the number of border guards from 21,000 to 42,000 and it would also complete 700 miles of fencing. The other story involves a lawsuit filed in San Diego, California where a widow and her two children are suing the U.S. claiming that the government endorses a “rocking policy” that allows border patrol agents to shoot and kill Mexicans for throwing rocks at them.

In both cases, the racism, waste and stupidity of the people in power and those charged with “protecting our borders” has never been more clearly shown for what it truly is. Do we really need 42,000 border patrol agents along the U.S. Mexico border? Are we expecting hordes of raging terrorists driving tanks any day now? Will 700 miles of fence really make any difference? And does shooting unarmed people speak well of a government that once welcomed immigrants?

It would be nice if some sanity were to return to this debate, but it would appear that the Senate is far more interested in appeasing conservative Republicans than passing legislation that is intelligent, even-handed, and reasonable. We need to keep up the pressure on our elected leaders if we are to ever see progress in this area. And it will be very interesting to see what happens in the lawsuit when you consider that the last time a border patrol officer was killed by a thrown rock was 1942.
